Summer Break Reading Challenge

Wishlist Wednesday - Another Faust

From Amazon:

One night, in cities all across Europe, five children vanish — only to appear, years later, at an exclusive New York party with a strange and elegant governess. Rumor and mystery follow the Faust teenagers to the city’s most prestigious high school, where they soar to suspicious heights with the help of their benefactor’s extraordinary "gifts." But as the students claw their way up — reading minds, erasing scenes, stopping time, stealing power, seducing with artificial beauty — they start to suffer the sideeffects of their own addictions. And as they make further deals with the devil, they uncover secrets more shocking than their most unforgivable sins. At once chilling and wickedly satirical, this contemporary reimagining of the Faustian bargain is a compelling tale of ambition, consequences, and ultimate redemption.

Review - and Falling, Fly

and Falling, Fly and Falling, Fly by Skyler White

My rating: 2 of 5 stars
I had a really rough time with this one. It has interesting characters. And an interesting plot. But when reading it, I found it to be uneven and disjointed. There would be sections that were great, but then the next would be confusing and out of place. I really think I could have enjoyed it more if it was smoother. There was also a weird mix of philosophy and theology that was mixed in. Could have had good effects on the story but they werent incorporated as well as I would have liked. At some points they just served to make the story more confusing.

Review - Deception

Deception (Haunting Emma, #1) Deception by Lee Nichols

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Great start to a new series. Really looking forward to what comes next and finding out more about the characters. Emma is a interesting character as are the rest. How they relate to each other and grow is going to make this a fun series to read.

Review - Guardian

Guardian (Eyes of the Republic, #2) Guardian by Claire Delacroix

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Enjoyed this one a lot more than the first book. Still well written with great characters and a good story line. But with having already read one book in the series, the learning curve for the world was not as rough. Made it much easier to enjoy the story.

Review - Fallen

Fallen (Eyes of the Republic, #1) Fallen by Claire Delacroix

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Really more of a 3 1/2 stars book. Interesting setting, great characters. But at times it was hard to follow. It was such a complex new world that it took some adjusting. Good writing though and interesting characters and plot so going to see what happens in book 2.

Review - Spiders Bite

Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Great start to a new series. I love the characters the world that is set up and am really looking forward to more to come. While reading this one I am not really sure what I think of Donovan Caine. But hopefully we will see more of him and form a real impression.

Coming Soon - Sirens Call

Between desire and love there are some things that can’t stay buried, even in the deep of the ocean.

As a woman with a secret, lighthouse keeper Tessa Lonike savors her solitude on the island of Little Mer, off the coast of Maine. During a violent storm, Tessa spots a man thrashing in the ice cold waters and dives in to save him, using her ability as a mermaid to easily pull him to shore.

When Kenneth Randall awakens on the beach he is alone, left with the haunting memory of his beautiful, flame-haired savior. But a year later, when Kenneth meets her again, he’s determined not to let Tessa slip away. Just as the desire between them begins to burn, Tessa’s archaeologist ex-lover comes back to town with a tantalizing clue to her murky heritage.

The trio travel to the Mediterranean in search of answers, and when Tessa inadvertently opens an underwater portal they find a lost mermaid city. But in the deep, not everything is as it seems, and Tessa must decide if she wants to take her place as the royal heir, or follow the call of her heart…

From GoodReads:

Something strange is stalking the small town of Junction…

When junior Jess Gillmansen gets called out of class by Guidance, she can only presume it’s for one of two reasons. Either they’ve finally figured out who wrote the scathing anti-jock editorial in the school newspaper or they’re hosting yet another intervention for her about her mom. Although far from expecting it, she’s relieved to discover Guidance just wants her to show a new student around—but he comes with issues of his own including a police escort.

The newest member of Junction High, Pietr Rusakova has secrets to hide--secrets that will bring big trouble to the small town of Junction—secrets including dramatic changes he’s undergoing that will surely end his life early.

June NA Mini-Challenge

Literary Escapism is hosting another great mini-challenge that also fits into the New Author challenge for the year.

Here are the details from the challenge post:

1. You do not have to be a participant of the New Authors Challenge, but if you’re not, why not?
2. The Challenge will run from June 1st through the 30th. All reviews must have an June 2010 date.
3. The goal is to read up to 5 different novels that are either the first in a new series, a new genre for that author or is a brand new author. Write up a review on your blog and then come back to the official start post and add your link to Mr. Linky.
4. This is a New Author mini-challenge, so ideally the idea is to try someone new, but not required. The novel just has to be their first – first published, released in that genre or of a new series (which was started within the last year).

Visit the sign-up post here to join in the fun.
