The
Mortician’s Wife is a fictional tale about a very real building. Known locally as the Old Mortuary, the
citizens of Dunsmuir, CA have been trading ghost stories featuring the old
Victorian building ever since the death of the last mortician. Is it any wonder
that I simply had to write a novel
using the haunted old building as a backdrop?
I don’t
know how far back the old building’s ghost stories go, but I do know that after
her husband died, his wife moved to another apartment within the old
building. She remained there, living a
reclusive life, even though she was so frightened of the spirits who roamed the
halls that she refused to sleep anywhere other than in a tiny alcove in the
room she chose as her bedroom. For some
reason, she believed the alcove was the only place where it would be safe for
her to sleep.
Years
later, after the old woman had finally left (it is rumored that she finally
went mad, after having lived alone there for four decades, and was taken to a
nursing home) a man who was doing renovation work stumbled upon two urns of
unclaimed ashes. After the ashes were
finally given to the proper descendents, the most recent rash if late night
noises and opening and closing of doors
ended.
The
building passed from owner to owner, some of whom claimed to have experienced
ghostly events while other refused to admit that anything unusual ever happened
there. Most recently a couple have moved
into the building and have done substantial renovating. Linda and Brad Warner, the present owners,
have been experiencing an amazing amount of supernatural events from the very
first night they moved in.
The Warners
have been kind enough to give me free reign to visit and “experience” their
home. Unfortunately ,or maybe
fortunately, I have yet to see or hear their unique roommates. However, that does not mean they are not
there. The evidence of scratches on the
glass pane of an inside door, that were not there when they moved in, is plenty
of evidence for me!
The Old
Mortuary is being readied for visitors who enjoy courting unseen spirits. Nancy has decorated the entire building
beautifully, much as it might have been during its early Victorian days. I hope she has many brave, overnight
guests. I, however, will not be one of
them!
